    What is Feng Shui?

Feng Shui Bedroom: Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese pseudo-scientific methodology aimed at harmonising energies in a space and bringing in their natural flow to infuse positivity in your homes, offices or any other place you want to balance.

It has always been about the art of balance and literally translates to Wind-Water, thus denoting energy or Chi’s fluidity in our world.

This ancient practice has entered many ultra-modern homes and is favoured by many personalities like Johnny Depp, Oprah Winfrey, Madonna, Bill Gates, Richard Branson, and many more. Talk about being the celebrity favourite!

The good news is that Feng Shui is not limited to only these famous addresses but can easily be implemented in your homes with some simple knowledge and applications. Benefits of Feng Shui

From an overall perspective, Feng Shui is deployed to improve the quality of life you live by optimizing the flow of energy into your space. You can also talk to a Feng Shui expert for specific solutions as well.

    Health Improvement

Many adopt Feng Shui to help improve their health. Though it does not substitute a proper diet and exercise, it can, however, change the flow of energy in your space that makes you mentally and physically sound. How can you do this?

Figure out the Tien Yi – the health area of your space based on your Kua (or energy) as it influences your health. For instance, if your Tien Yi is on the east, then plan your bedroom in that area of the house. However, if that is not possible, you can put your bed on the eastern edge of the room.

    Attracting Wealth

One of the most common reasons why people adopt Feng Shui is their desire to attract wealth into their lives. This practice is especially common among business owners and tycoons who consult Feng Shui experts before setting up their factories and offices.

For residential spaces, water features like a small fountain or a fish tank can help attract the wealth inducing energy.

    Enhances Energy and Motivation

Huo Hai or the obstacle area based on the person’s Kua heavily impacts the person’s energy and motivation levels. Try to keep these obstacle areas away from where you work to enhance your career and life.

These areas can usually be reserved for storage rooms and washrooms while spaces like bedrooms and living rooms should be in the pathway of the Shen Chi – the Prosperity area.

    Improved Learning Capabilities

Wen Chang – literature & knowledge, is based on the person’s birth year and Feng Shui suggests matching it with the home’s Wen Chang area to allow the flow of knowledge. If that is not possible, you can also place 4 lucky bamboos in that area.

Brings Down Negative Emotions and Temper

It is very easy to get caught up with the daily conundrums and give way to negative emotions – one of them being temper. There are a few factors like your bedroom door facing the kitchen area or the kitchen stove within 15 degrees in the southern region can flare tempers. But guess what? Feng Shui can help you there as well.

    Basic Principles of Feng Shui

Feng Shui is made of five critical elements – metal, wood, water, earth and fire.

    • Metal: Represents logic & intelligence

    • Wood: Represents growth & creativity

    • Fire: Represents passion & energy

    • Earth: Represents stability & balance

    • Water: Represents wisdom & serenity

So how does one apply these elements in the right manner? The answer is Bagua Map.

    What is a Bagua Map?

A bagua map is one of the most common tool experts utilize while designing a feng shui complementing home. This map is instrumental in understanding the energy of a space and which element would fit in to optimize the flow of energy?

The bagua map is divided into 9 quadrants, each assigned an element and color to it that directs the right way of implementing feng shui friendly decor. These 9 quadrants are:

    • Fame
    • Family
    • Wealth
    • Career
    • Wisdom
    • Health
    • Children
    • Helpful People
    • Love

Bagua MapYou can simply use the bagua map as your floor plan. You can also draw an outline of your home and place your bagua map on top. However, make sure that your doorway is facing south and aligned to one of the bottom three quadrants. Instead of going for the whole house, you can also use this bagua map for small spaces as well – no pressure there.

The Dos and Don'ts of Feng Shui in your Bedroom

The energy that we allow to flow in our home and spaces directly impacts our mental, physical and emotional well-being. Feng Shui is the science of optimizing this flow of energy but it also comes with its own handbook of Do’s and Don’ts.

So if you are seeking positivity and brightness in your space, here are some Do’s and Don’ts you need to take care of with respect to Feng Shui.

Do: Have fresh air flowing in your space at all times. Having good quality air flow into your home lifts up your senses and makes you more pumped and active. So open those windows and let that breeze in!

Don’t: Do not let that leaky pipe stay unattended for long. Plumbing reflects the energy cycle in your home and life. Any cracks or dents, automatically affects the flow of energy in your space and disrupts the overall harmony. Not to mention, you have to get that leaky pipe fixed one day before its too late!

Do: Declutter your space. Removing unnecessary stuff from your space opens it up to let more energy or Chi in that can harmonise the space and uplift the ambiance. Cluttering is also a direct invite to festering negative and stale energy that just keeps swirling in one place and overwhelming you.

Don’t: Do not have two mirrors facing each other. It bounces energies off each other, blocking each other’s path and letting the stale energy accumulate and affect the surroundings. Do not do this!

Do: Do have plants in your home and by home, we mean, everywhere! In your bedroom, living room, patio and any place that can hold them. Plants synthesise oxygen and take in CO2 which makes energy flow easy and keeps the environment fresh and healthy.

Don’t: Do not push your bed up against the wall. When your bed is stumped against a corner, it does not allow the flow of energy and makes it difficult for you to rejuvenate as you sleep.

Do: Having a solid headboard is one crucial aspect of Feng Shui. It creates positive and strong energy that helps receive quality sleep and offers a sense of well-being. It is a hub for positive energy, just make sure it is not completely stacked against the wall.

Don’t: Keep the door open at night. Open doors allow energy to escape and you want the positive energy that flew in the whole day to stay throughout the night and help you get the best sleep and mental as well as physical rejuvenation.

    Bonus Do

Let some sunshine in your space. Open the curtains in the morning, and crack open that window to let some natural warmth in as this natural light has a lot of positive and healing energy. Try using light color upholstery as it will reflect the natural light and enhance its positive effects.
